Thread: Choosing the Right Sod / 90% shade, what sod do I need?

90% shade, what sod do I need?

Hello!  I live in Central California.  Back a coupe months ago I had a guy come out to my house and put down Tall Fesque (sp?) in my backyard.  However, the whole entire lawn died out.  I was watering it correctly, to his specifications, but...  my yard is about 90% shaded - seriously.  The only part that grew was the part that got the 10% sun.

What type of sod should I use in my shaded yard?  I want to make sure I don't get taken again!

Thanks for any and all your help!

Shelly

Our server is showing the time wrong time! The time doesn't seem to have been set back. I will check into this tomorrow.

Anyways, I just wanted to clarify that the information will be posted Nov. 7th before 5pm for you. If you have any other questions please ask away.

Re: 90% shade, what sod do I need?

Shelly,

After doing some research I am sorry to say that there are no types of grass (that we sell) which will work for up to 90% shade. We do sell a special shade blend http://ca.lawnnation.com/CA/ItemDetail.aspx?itemId=1009 but the specifications are only for up to 40% shade.

There are essentially three options you have:

1. You can really trim back your tree (if it is a tree) that is creating so much shade. A tree professional can trim a tree right which will benefit the tree, lessen the maintenance, prevent limbs from breaking/falling, and also allow sun to shine through onto your lawn area.

2. You can look for a sod company which sells St. Augustine. Most people do not like the look and feel of the St. Augustine grass and for this reason most growers to not offer it. I am pretty sure that there is at least one company that does though. If you can find the company that does I would recommend that you ask them if it will work for up to 90% shade. I have heard that this is the only type of grass for extreme shade, but since we do not sell it I have never really fully dug into the specifications. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._augustine_grass

3. You can use different landscape materials all together. There are many types of moss, plants, bark, and rock which, if designed right, can make your yard look very appealing.

I hope this info helped you. If you have any other questions please let us know.

Re: 90% shade, what sod do I need?
Thank you VERY much for your research!  I really appreciate it...  I will look into the St. Augustine (we have kids and really need the yard to be sod!).  I don't own ONE tree that provides the shade to my yard.  We don't have a large yard, but they are three very large Maple trees in the surrounding yards.  I can only cut back so much that comes into my yard, which I've done.  Thank you very much!!!!  Your company is very helpful...  good luck with business!!
